Innovative Testing Strategy Developed for DHEC Approval
A South Carolina power company sought regulatory approval to use two new synthetic fuel binders to improve the
combustion characteristics of coal. Because the resulting ash is disposed in landfills, the South Carolina
Department of Health and Environmental Control (SCDHEC) required data to evaluate the impact of the binders on ash
when coal is burned.
The problem: previous conventional efforts to characterize impacts of the binders had failed. GEL Engineering, LLC,
along with our sister laboratory, developed an innovative strategy for extracting and analyzing samples. The new
data was presented to our client, and SCDHEC subsequently approved the use of the binders. The result will
positively impact our client’s operations by millions of dollars. Problem solved.
