Greenville, South Carolina – September 24, 2009 – The City of Spartanburg (City), South Carolina, has awarded GEL Engineering, LLC (GEL), a contract to manage the City’s U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Brownfield Assessment Grant Activities.

The City of Spartanburg was awarded a total of $400,000 in Brownfields Assessments Grants, from the EPA: $200,000 to address hazardous substances and $200,000 to address petroleum issues. The City will use the grant funds to further economic development by identifying and revitalizing former industrial and commercial sites.

GEL is responsible for managing the technical component of implementing the grant program including serving as a technical liaison between the City, regulatory authorities, and subcontractors.

GEL is also the lead environmental consultant for one of the largest Brownfield projects in the United States - the Magnolia Project, a Brownfield assessment, remediation, restoration and redevelopment project in Charleston, South Carolina.
