The American Council of Engineering Companies of South Carolina has awarded GEL Engineering, LLC a 2010 ACEC-SC Award for Engineering Excellence. GEL was recognized for the firm’s development of a geographical information system (GIS) database for managing the contents, hazards, and other characteristics of the various compartments onboard the USS Yorktown located at the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina.
The USS Yorktown is an 888ft. Essex class aircraft carrier that served in the US Navy from 1943-1970 and received 11 battle stars and the Presidential Unit Citation for services in World War II and 5 battle stars for services in Vietnam. The Yorktown became a national historic landmark in 1986 and has been a part of the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum since 1975.
This project uniquely applied aspects of GIS to a Naval ship, essentially treating the Yorktown’s compartments as individual parcels. This tool saves Patriots Point time and money by cataloging and managing information for each of the ship’s 2000 compartments. The tool identifies previously recognized hazards prior to entering infrequently visited compartments, organizing routine maintenance programs, and assisting in the routing of essential utilities. The database helps Patriots Point manage the preservation of a national historic landmark for future generations to experience.
With offices in Charleston and Greenville, South Carolina, and Durham, North Carolina, GEL Engineering provides comprehensive engineering, surveying, environmental, and industrial hygiene services to local, state, and federal government agencies as well as private industry. The company is a member of The GEL Group, Inc. and headquartered in Charleston, South Carolina.
