Archaeology

Completed by 1742, Drayton Hall is the oldest surviving example of Georgian Paladian architecture in the southern United States. GEL Geophysics, LLC assisted Drayton Hall in reviewing their archaeology programs. Numerous test pits have been excavated at the site during the last two significant archaeological investigations. These test pits yielded numerous 18th century artifacts.

GEL Geophysics performed a 400 MHz CART survey of an approximately 0.5 acre area of prospective historical interest. The data took 4 hours to acquire, and 2 days to process and interpret. As a point of comparison, the archaeological program spent a majority of the previous summer digging 23 archaeological test pits. Although geophysical investigations could never replace the concrete results of a physical archaeological investigation, it can minimize the efforts and direct the archaeologist to the area of greatest significance.

The CART data imaged numerous subsurface anomalies and a few distinct circular, earthen features. The origin of these circular features is unknown. However, the noninvasive investigation of them will allow archaeologists to carefully orient future digs over areas of interest, thus minimizing excavation time, and maximizing results.
